A recent study revealed an average service time of 5 minutes and 43 seconds across leading quick-service restaurants (QSRs).
On February 29th, QSR Magazine and Intouch Insight presented the Inside the Annual QSR Drive-Thru Report webinar. Ben Coley, editor of QSR Magazine, and Sarah Becket, director of marketing at Intouch Insight, delved into the findings of the annual study conducted by Intouch Insight, including a detailed analysis of the top-performing chains in terms of service speed, order accuracy, and customer service.
The study employed mystery shoppers nationwide throughout July and August 2023 to assess the performance of ten prominent QSRs: Arby’s, Burger King, Carl’s Jr., Chick-fil-A, Dunkin’, Hardee’s, KFC, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s.
“While our core methodology remains unchanged, we cannot overlook the significant advancements occurring within the industry,” stated Becket. “A novel aspect introduced for 2023 is our Innovation Locations category.”
Although not included in the primary results, researchers compared performance to the main categories at two innovative locations: Taco Bell Defy in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, with its four-lane drive-thru, and McDonald’s automated, dine-in-free location in Fort Worth, Texas.
“These locations boast streamlined processes, cutting-edge technology, and a unique ambiance that creates a memorable dining experience,” explained Coley.
The average service time for standard locations was 4 minutes and 22 seconds. However, the innovation locations surpassed this average, with McDonald’s clocking in at 3 minutes and 49 seconds and Taco Bell at an impressive 2 minutes and 31 seconds.
In addition to the new category, this year’s report provides performance data across five key areas: service speed, order accuracy, suggestive selling, food quality, and overall customer satisfaction.
Service Speed and Timeliness
QSR Magazine reported an improvement in timeliness since 2022. The total time elapsed from a customer entering the drive-thru line to exiting averaged 5 minutes and 43 seconds across all brands included in the study—a 29-second reduction compared to the previous year. Wait time, defined as the period between a customer entering the line and initiating their order, also experienced a slight decrease.
Service time, encompassing the duration from order placement to food receipt, improved by a modest 4 seconds.
